Looks Great, Feels Great Jun 16, 2009
By TW Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1PL9WYJNMSFFS One of the things I like best about this notebook is that it is refillable. The refills can be picked up for a few bucks so it's essentially a very classy notebook that can be used over and over again.
The leather is high quality and is pretty thick. The leather has a more rustic feel so it will show if you scratch it with your fingernail or something. I imagine that's the style, but I still try to be careful with it.
I've generally used portfolios pads in the past (the ones that open up and the pages flip vertically), but portfolios made using the backside of the pages difficult and front pages would fall out. I wanted a nice leather notebook, and because the composition notebook is refillable, I can keep using it rather than fill it up once and it's done.
The only thing I wish it had was a pen holder, but oh well. I purchased the saddle brown color, and it's been a great notebook. I love pulling it out, and people that see it go, "Ooh, I want one of those."

Half the price and I like it lots better! Jul 08, 2010

I bought this notebook to replace a similar sized one I got from Levenger several years ago. This cover is less than half the price of the Levenger product and I like it lots better.
The Levenger notebook, while being more "finished", looked a bit artificial. This cover is clearly hand made and well made (in the US). There is no question that the leather is real, substantial, and that it will last a long time. Beyond that it is the kind of leather that gets better looking as it gets used.
My only suggestion is to consider replacing the composition book insert with a Moleskine Ruled Notebook Soft Cover XLarge or similar filler. You will need to do a little bit of trimming so the cover will fit in the slots that keep the insert in place. However it will fit and may be worth the effort and additional cost if you prefer that kind of paper. On the other hand, if you're OK with regular composition books then this notebook is perfect as delivered.
One additional thought, this is the same size, length and width, as my netbook. I've found that both will easily fit in the computer pocket of my Case Logic XNTM-3 Midsize eSling (Black). In fact, this would be a great way to carry this notebook along with a few pens, a phone/MP3 player and other odds and ends even if you don't have a netbook-sized computer to go with it.
BTW, I feel that honest, effective reviews can take the place of first-hand experiences that are lacking in online shopping. I've always appreciated the help I've received from other reviewers and work hard to return the favor as best as I can. I hope you found this review helpful and if there was anything you thought was lacking or unclear leave a comment and I'll do what I can to fix it.

Great Value Jan 06, 2011
By Raqueleux Beautiful supple leather. The distressed look is much more organic than the shinier other leather notebook covers I found. My husband loved it.
I would've given it 5 stars but the product bar code sticker on the cover was hard to remove. The adhesive was sticky and it took a while to get the tackiness off. It did eventually come off, but it was really annoying to have to deal with and they could should NOT put anything sticky on it that will be hard to take off or alter the texture or color of the leather.

Picture is a lie Mar 17, 2010
By Cookies & Ska The picture is far off from what it actually looks like. Resembles just sheets of leather crudely put together with a thick piece of thread. I bought this and the pocket book as a gift for a friend who is working to become a journalist so I was a bit disappointed. I give it 4 stars because it still looks nice and does it's job of covering comp notebooks.

Comprehensive Review of Leather Covers for Composition Books: Rustico, Levenger, and Bespoke Goods Mar 30, 2012
By B. Wei
"Amazon.com Expert"
I was looking specifically for a very high quality composition bookcover for the standard size composition books (sized 7.5" by 9.75" by Mead and National). There are only a few places make them in the 7.5" by 9.75" size of the composition book which are Rustico, Levenger, and Bespoke Goods. Oberon Design and Saddleback Leather also make leather covers, but they're a larger size for a custom filler that they sell. I write a lot so I want a high quality cover, but an affordable refill option so composition books are the ideal choice. I'm a writer by profession so I've alot of composition books around for works in progress. I've owned all three brands, Rustico, Levenger, and Bespoke Goods, and all make really great products so I'll just run down of the pros and cons.
Rustico is made of three thick leather pieces sewn together. It has a matt feel to it. Its a cowboy rustic, rough, rugged feel to it. As others on Amazon have mentioned the leather finish on this particular comp book cover is something you've need to watch out for because if you have something sticky on it or like oil or something it could stain the leather. Most of the covers I've seen a different finished that keeps lots of the oil and debris out of the leather itself. I'd wish they'd seal or finish the edges of it. The leather is quite firm and Rustico says that after some use it will get broken in but it still not quite so supple yet. Rustico is priced around $50.
Levenger is a multi-leather composition book cover (its got several leather pieces) that have been sewn in. Its by far the most "processed" of the three leather composition book covers. Its professional looking, but its not got the natural leather look and feel like Rustico and Bespoke Goods leather covers. Its definitely leather, buts its too processed for me and the leather is too uniform so you don't get the natural grains that come out with the other two covers. It costs between $109-$129 for a cover so its also far and away the most expensive. Its got a sharp professional look to it, but its a rather expensive and it feels too delicate so at the end of the day it doesn't get too much use. Probably suited for a boardroom or an executive office.
Bespoke Goods is made from a single calf hide. The plus behind this over the others that have 3 or more leathers sewn together is that after 10 or 20 years no matter what happens the cover won't fall apart because the cover isn't sewn together so there aren't any threads that will become undone. The threads are the weakest part so by making it a single full-grain hide its super durable, and its got that nice seamless look to it. The leather is also amazingly buttery feel which I think is part of their hand dying process and how they use nature vegetable dyes. As the dyes are hand applied, it has got this great gradient that is deep dark brown at the edges that becomes a warm orange-brown in the center. Bespoke Goods is priced around $40, but they've got some other exotic hides (like Bison) and that can creep up to like $130 +.
Overall, Rustico got the nice cowboy feel to it that is good to throw in a rucksack and go out camping. Levenger is well done but I found it pricey and the leather too delicate to be a daily user. Bespoke Goods was a pleasant surprise as the hand dye makes the natural grains come out and the fact that its a solid leather cover is a huge draw for me.
